Effect of Music on Solving Arithematic Problems As Compare To Learning And Retrieval Of Simple English Words

Abstract
Most students are subjected to music in the residence halls all hours the day whether they like it or not
choose to listen to music while they study. The aim of the study is to find out and compare the effect
of different kind of music genre on solving arithmetic problems and learning and retrieval of simple
English words. For this purpose 25 students were selected and were asked to solve simple arithmetic
problems and learning and retrieval of simple English words each task in one minute duration with music
in the background. Tables’ results show the effect of different genre of music on solving simple
arithmetic problems and learning and retrieval of simple English words. The results show that different
genre of music: pop, folk, classical and jazz would little interfere the solving of arithmetic problems
as compare to learning and retrieval of simple English words.
